Rikshospitalet University Hospital is a highly specialised university hospital with national responsibilities within complicated treatments.

Rikshospitalet University Hospital (until 1 October 2007 called Rikshospitalet-Radiumhospitalet Medical Center) consists of several hospitals in different parts of southern and eastern Norway.

After the merger between Rikshospitalet and Radiumhospitalet (Norwegian Radium Hospital) on 1 January 2005, the hospital's overriding objective is to function as a national reference hospital that will safeguard and develop highly specialist medicine within six core areas: transplantation medicine, children's illnesses, women's illnesses, oncology, coronary disorders and disorders of the brain and nervous system.
